AWS has launched a BVR Competency, a partner designation built to grow revenue that partners earn after the initial sale of AI workloads, MSSP Alert reports. The move signals where AWS expects channel money to come from next: not the migration itself, but what runs on top of it.

The name matters. AWS competencies — for machine learning, for security, for migration — have historically marked partners that can execute a specific technical motion. A competency aimed at business value realization, which is what BVR stands for, marks a different skill: proving that deployed AI workloads return measurable value to the customer after go-live.

What does the new competency change for partners?

For channel firms, the designation gives AWS a formal way to identify and reward partners that keep working an account after the sale closes. That aligns with how AI revenue actually develops. A customer buys capacity and models once, then pays repeatedly for tuning, integration, and expansion — revenue that depends on continued seller involvement rather than a clean handoff.

Partners that hold the competency can expect AWS to route opportunity and co-selling support toward them, as the company does with its other designations. The launch also functions as a signal to buyers: in a market crowded with AI claims, AWS is telling customers that competency holders have passed a filter for post-sales delivery.

Why is post-sales AI revenue the target now?

AI workloads carry a long tail of services work. Customers rarely get full value from a first deployment on their own; they need help measuring outcomes, retraining models, and extending usage across departments. Each of those steps produces billable work and, for AWS, higher consumption on its platform.

A competency that pushes partners into that cycle serves both sides. The partner builds a recurring revenue line; AWS grows consumption without adding direct headcount.

What should channel firms watch next?

The details that will decide whether this matters — validation requirements, financial thresholds, and the level of AWS support behind the badge — sit in the program documentation rather than the announcement itself. Partners selling AI into mid-market and enterprise accounts will want to weigh the cost of qualification against the size of the post-sales opportunity in their existing book.

The competency is one more sign that cloud vendors now measure partner value by what happens after the deal closes, and further designations tied to outcomes rather than deployments are a reasonable expectation.
